John Dutton is the seventh generation owner of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, the largest ranch in the United States, and still growing, however the land is under constant threat from a land developer who wants to construct condos upon his land and a Native American casino mogul seeking what he believed to be his peoples birthright. His eldest son, Lee, is meant to run the ranch after he passes, his daughter Beth represents one of the largest bank firms in America, and his middle son, Jamie, seeks a political career as Montana's Attorney Gerenal. His youngest son, Kayce, however resists the idea of returning to support the ranch, since he lives on the Reservation with his wife, Monica, and their son, Tate, also it is due to the shady business that occurs on and off the land.
Season 2[]
John Dutton faces a new threat to the ranch. Aside from Thomas Rainwater and Dan Jenkins, the Beck brothers have proven to be a thorn in the side of all three. Dutton realizes now two of his greatest enemies have become allies as the tycoon brothers who have political ties and connections with militia groups continue their aggressive threat. On top of that, Kayce is back on the ranch, Bethany is expanding the Dutton land, and Jamie stepped away from politics to work on the ranch.

The fight with the Becks is won and there's a minor ceasefire with the Broken Rock Reservation, however, once again, John Dutton and Yellowstone Dutton Ranch face a new threat that may be near impossible to win. Market Equities, a Fortune 500 company with some political ties, is seeking control of the Dutton ranch through any means. On top of that, there is hostility against his ranch from a rival rancher with an old grudge against the Duttons. After defending his ranch from one adversary, can John hold onto his family's legacy once more against a far more powerful enemy or will he be the final Dutton to possess the ranch?
Season 4[]
In the wake of a coordinated attack on the Dutton's and their ranch, John is badly wounded and winds up in a coma only to emerge months later, Bethany survives a bombing, but not without being burned herself, and Kayce manages to fend off a shootout at the Montana Livestock Association offices in Livingston, while the ranch hands fend off against armed mercenaries hitting the ranch. Jamie, however, has branched from the family and is starting his own dynasty. Everyone manages to survive the attack, but the question remains, who orchestrated the attack and why?
