Overview[]

V for Vendetta is a 2006 American produced political thriller film starring Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea, and John Hurt.  It was directed by James McTeigue and is an adaptation of the popular comic book series, "V for Vendetta" by Alan Moore and David Lloyd.  The film is notable in pop culture for the stylized Guy Fawkes mask that the titular protagonist V sports has become used internationally by activists and anti-government protestors.

In the oppressive and totalitarian England in the not-so-distant future, innocent bystander Evey Hammond bears witness as an eccentric masked megalomaniac who calls himself "V" bombs the Old Bailey.  V proclaims himself to be following in the footsteps of Guy Fawkes who has become synonymous with the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605; an attempt to bomb the House of Lords―hence his choice of mask.

V has declared a vendetta against the dictatorship which controls England and intends to restore freedom to the people. Is he a savior or a madman?

Or perhaps, he's both...

Plot[]

In 2020, the world is on the brink of collapse from war and disease. The only stable country is England but freedom is all but forgotten in the new England.

A young girl, Evey Hammond is rescued from being raped by members of the secret police when she is caught outside of curfew by a mysterious man in a Guy Fawkes' mask calling himself "V". She learns that he has declared a vendetta against the fascist overlords of England and is labeled a terrorist. Unfortunately, she finds that she is considered an associate of his and finds herself on the run.

Meanwhile, as Inspector Eric Finch seeks to hunt down V; he becomes increasingly disillusioned as the more of V's past is uncovered through his investigation. And he begins to wonder if he is truly on the right side at all.
