Overview[]

The Suicide Squad is a 2021 American produced action-adventure comedy superhero film starring Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, and Daniela Melchior with Sylvester Stallone contributing as a principal voice actor. It was directed by James Gunn and is considered a sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad film. The film is considered to be part of the DC Extended Universe. The streaming TV series, Peacemaker is a spin-off based on events of the film.

The manipulative and dastardly Director Amanda Waller has a new extreme risk black ops mission and a new crop of expendable super-villains! Survive and you'll get ten years off your sentence ... or you die. It's a mission for only the hardiest and most skilled and most devious individuals around ... because it's absolutely suicide! But then again, that's kind of their thing after all ... they're the Suicide Squad.

Production[]

There were early plans for a sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad film even before it was released with David Ayer expected to return as director despite the extreme difficulty of the production process of filming. Due to the financial success of the film despite being derided by many critics; several spin-off films featuring Deadshot and Harley Quinn starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie respectively were immediately green lit for production and a sequel film, tentatively titled Suicide Squad 2 was subsequently announced in 2017. However, Ayers was critical of the studio interference of his script and filming for the original film and had lobbied hard for an R-Rated film for the sequel.
