The late Sidney Toler ( b. 28 April 1874 - d. 12 February 1947) was an American actor, playwright and theater director. He is best remembered for his portrayal of the Chinese-American detective Charlie Chan. Before he became Chan, who he portrayed in 22 films, Toler appeared in supporting roles in 50 motion pictures.
