Overview[]

Peggy Carter is one of the most prominent members of the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) and was Captain America's girlfriend during World War II. She continued to lead the fight against Hydra and was a major contributor along with Howard Stark in the formation of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division; or more commonly known as S.H.I.E.L.D. She subsequently passed away of old age in 2016.

In the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger, she is portrayed by Hayley Atwell who has gone to reprise the character with a number of cameo appearances and guest starring in several feature films and TV series of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before graduating to the titular role of the Agent Carter TV series.

Background[]

Peggy Carter is a supporting character based on the minor comic book character published by Marvel Comics. She first officially appeared in Tales of Suspense #84, published in December of 1966 as a retroactive continuity implant as Captain America's lover during World War II when he was fighting overseas in Europe.

Originally, she was an unnamed throwaway American secret agent who was a part of the clandestine Super-Soldier Project that created Captain America. She masqueraded as an elderly storekeeper when in actuality, she was the first line of defense for the secret laboratory housing the program and the first individual who welcomed the scrawny Steve Rogers to the program, warning him that things were rarely what they appeared to be in the first few panels of the comic book.

Decades later, she was retroactively reintroduced as Peggy Carter, a daring secret agent who blamed herself for failing to spot the Nazi saboteur and assassin who walked right by her and killed Professor Erskine and thus ending the chance of recreating the Super-Soldier Formula.

As the United States was not yet participating in the war in Europe overseas, she voluntarily joined the French Resistance and quickly rose up to become one of their most trusted agents and was reunited with Steve Rogers who was now known as Captain America. They were involved on numerous missions together and became lovers before she was badly injured by an exploding shell and was sent home to recuperate. Shortly afterwards, Captain America would be lost and apparently killed in action near the end of World War II. Carter however was left with fragmentary amnesia including her memories of Captain America.

However she did retain memories of some of her adventures in the French Resistance and would tell stories of them, inadvertently inspiring the young Sharon Carter; her young relative into becoming a modern-day S.H.I.E.L.D field operative code named Agent 13. Sharon Carter herself would became later romantically involved with Captain America after his revival in the modern era. Neither of whom were aware of the connection between as Peggy Carter had used an alias during her overseas service and upon losing her memories, had never been able to tell Sharon of her link to the Sentinel of Liberty.

Dr. Faustus, an enemy of Captain America was in the midst of investigating his past to better attack him psychologically when he inadvertently stumbled across Peggy Carter's existence and her long-forgotten connection to the hero. Faustus subsequently kidnapped the now-elderly Peggy in order to torment the hero. However the trauma of the incident restored her memories and Peggy would later become a trusted part of the Avengers Support Staff in 1989 before it along with the team was briefly dissolved in 1996. She would eventually pass away from old age in 2011 in the Marvel Comics-verse.

She however left her mark and made several appearances throughout various animated and live action TV series and feature films, usually revolving around the Sentinel of Liberty as part of his supporting cast of characters.
