Plot[]

While on vacation in London with his wife and daughter, Naval Historian and Professor Jack Ryan is witness to a brutal ULA terrorist attack and assassination attempt on Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and a cousin to the Queen, Lord Holmes and his family.

As one of the terrorists, Sean Miller orders Holmes to come out; Ryan rushes out and disables him, taking his weapon. Ryan engages in a fierce gunfight with the others; killing one of the terrorists and throwing the others into confusion even as he is wounded. His actions at that critical moment, stalls the assault and forces the terrorists to flee from the responding police.

Afterwards, Jack Ryan finds himself hailed a hero by the press and lauded with royal honors for his actions by the Queen of England herself.

However not everyone thinks so highly of Ryan's actions Such as Sean Miller who is imprisoned thanks to his actions. Even worse, the terrorist that he has slain was Patrick Miller, Sean's younger brother and he solemnly vows vengeance on Ryan and his kin.

His compatriots in the ULA kill the guards on his prison convoy and free him.

Ryan is disturbed by the news of Miller's escape and decides to contact Admiral Jim Greer of the Central Intelligence Agency whom he previously worked under as an analyst before retiring to teach naval history at Annapolis Naval Academy.
