Background[]
The late John "The Duke" Wayne ( b. 26 May 1907 - d. 11 June 1979 ) was an American actor, producer, and director. He appeared in live action television and cinematic roles.
Wayne first debuted in silent films and made the transition to talking pictures where he flourished as a legendary leading man in dozens of western and war themed films. In particular, he was famous for his height, powerful presence, and distinctive gravely voice and to many; he personified the ideal of the rugged American frontiersman and emerged as an American icon.
He was well known for his long standing friendship with his frequent co-star Maureen O'Hara and with noted director John Ford whom he collaborated on with numerous film projects.
Wayne is best known for his performances in Stagecoach; Red River; The Quiet Man; Hondo; The Searchers; Rio Bravo; The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance; True Grit; and The Shootist.

- When he was honored with a concrete block on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the sand used in the cement was specially brought in from Iwo Jima in honor of his 1949 film, Sands of Iwo Jima.
