Overview[]

Follows Riley, in her teenage years, encountering new emotions.

Plot[]

Two years after her move to San Francisco, 13-year-old Riley Andersen is entering high school. Her personified emotions—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger—now oversee a newly formed element of Riley's mind called her "Sense of Self", which houses memories and feelings that shape Riley's beliefs. Joy, aiming to fill the Sense of Self with only positive memories, has created a mechanism that launches negative memories to the back of Riley's mind.

Riley and her best friends, Bree and Grace, are invited to a weekend ice hockey camp, where Riley hopes to qualify for her school's team, the Firehawks. However, a "Puberty Alarm" goes off the night before camp, and a group of mind workers upgrade the emotion console, leaving Headquarters in disarray. The emotions find that Riley now overreacts when they try to control the console.

Once Riley gets in the car with Bree and Grace, she is looking forward to having their coach next year, but Grace suddenly tells her that Coach Roberts is not going to be their new coach. Bree said that she and Grace are going to a different school. They promised Riley that they still will get to hang out. Arriving at Camp, Riley meets the team’s FireHawk, Val Ortiz. Strangely, Riley said that she pretends to be from Michigan instead of Minnesota. It turns out a new orange emotion named Anxiety had appeared,

Joy was quite overwhelmed by her excited energy and the orange emotion said that the others are so excited to be here.

There was Envy, a cyan little girl emotion who is always jealous of things she wanted, Embarrassment, a giant male emotion who is shy and easily embarrassed but never speaks, and there is Ennui a bored indigo teenage emotion who uses a phone with a console app.

Joy assures the others that they can be unhelpful and promise that the next three days should be Grace and Bree. Anxiety says that it will determine the next four years and decides to take control of Riley to follow Val.

At the ice rink, Coach Robert divides the group into two teams so Riley needs to choose which team she needs to go on. Joy reminded Anxiety that Riley promised thanks to the Sense of Self.

Anxiety, deciding that Riley needs to change to fit in with the older players, launches the Sense of Self to the back of Riley's mind. With the mind of Sense of Self gone, she said that they can build a new Sense of Self. The five emotions refused to let her go down and plant the new anxious memory down but Embarrassment grabbed them and put them in a jar.

Anxiety promised that it is only until Riley needs a complex life. She sends them away into a memory vault. With the emotions trapped in the vault, they were not sure what to do until Riley’s secrets managed to free them.

Worried that the Sense of Self is still out there, Joy leads the team down the Stream of Consciousness, but Sadness tells them that they can’t take the tube back because someone at headquarters has to recall them. Joy, knocking that her blue friend knows the console better, takes a walkie talkie to her and sends her to the tube.

Under Anxiety's control, Riley is hanging out with the other teens at their hangout. One asked what her favorite song is. Anxiety sends a few memories down, along with Sadness unnoticed and searched around for any song emotions. Ennui takes control, making Riley sarcastically say that she loved Get Up and Glow.

This caused a massive chasm to open up in Riley’s mind. The emotions managed to escape and Joy suggested they had to go the long way.

Brace and Bree arrive and wonder what was going on. Riley said that she had the best night in her life with Ennui still controlling Riley. Her two friends began to leave. Deciding to call for the night, Val suggested that they need to get some sleep for the big game tomorrow.

Anxiety was happy to hear the news but tomorrow Riley needs to make the team. She decided to find some help and started to prepare for the night. Meanwhile, Embarrassment finds Sadness and, deciding to help her, he places some manuals so Anxiety, Ennui and Envy won’t see her.

Meanwhile, Joy and the other emotions made their way to Imagination land but to Joy’s surprise, everything has changed. They head to the pillowfort and see that the room is full of workers, their Anxiety tells them that they need to prepare Riley’s game.

Joy walks into an empty station and draws a positive painting. Disgust, Fear and Anger joined in too and started posting the assignment on. Anxiety sees the drawings and asks who sent them. Embarrassment, Envy and Ennui deny that they didn't do it. Finally, Anxiety realized that it was Joy.

Joy pleaded everyone that Anxiety is trying to hurt her and got the Mind workers to turn her back on her. The mind cops started to chase the emotions and they escaped on a balloon.

Anxiety was quite a shock that the projections were gone and they knew they wouldn't be ready. Envy suggested that the notebook Coach Roberts has would make her a FireHawk and what she’ll think of Riley.

Taking control of Riley, they guide her into Coach Roberts' office. Hiding from her spot, Sadness tells Joy that they are trying to make Riley break into the office. Joy tells Sadness that they had to stop Anxiety.

Sadness slowly steals Ennui’s phone, and controls Riley from opening the notebook. Recognizing the blue hue, Anxiety calls Ennui where her phone is. They looked around and found Sadness in the bedroom. Sadness defended Anxiety that this is not who Riley is. The orange emotion says it’s about who she needed to be but to her horror, she saw that Riley is not ready yet. Worried, Anxiety needed ideas to change the coach’s mind.

Collecting a lot of ideas, Anxiety managed to find a huge one and placed it onto the console.

At the back of the mind, Joy, Disgust, Anger and Fear finally made it to the back. They were surprised that there were a lot of negative emotions and climbing to the top, they found the Sense of Self but it faded.

Anxiety returned to headquarters after putting the last orange memories in and once the New Sense of Self is made, this one is self doubt, and not good enough. Confused, Envy wondered if it was okay. Anxiety promised that there is gonna be more room. However, Sadness is about to call the others back and alarmed, Anxiety destroys the recall tube.

The other emotions are stranded and realize that they are never gonna get back. Disgust asked Joy what they were gonna do. Joy was unsure that they can’t stop Anxiety, but they knew that they had to set the Sense of Self back before it’s too late. Anger gets an idea and calls Pouchy to help. Joy gets an idea, but they are gonna need a lot of dynamite to blow up the mountain. Gathering enough TNT, they set them to explode, sending the negative memories down and washing all the emotions back to headquarters.

With the game starting, Anxiety takes control of Riley to bring into the score, but because of the new sense of self, it causes Riley to perform poorly during her final tryout match, accidentally hurt Grace, and get sent to the penalty box.

Horrified, Envy and Anxiety realized that they hurt Grace, Anxiety frantically explained that she didn’t even see her. Suffering a panic attack, Anxiety swarms the console in a blinding whirlwind, trying to fix things and causing Riley to have a panic attack.

Realizing that it was too much, Embarrassment, Sadness, Envy and Ennui tried to pull the Sense of Self off but it won’t budge. The original emotions arrived in time and witness the orange tornado around the console. Joy struggled right in and finds Anxiety still in the control but glitching. She convinces her that Riley does not need to change to have a better future.

As soon as she lets go of the console, Joy grabs her out and pull the negative Sense of Self out and puts the old back one in, but it doesn't work. A guilt ridden Anxiety apologized, saying that she was trying to protect Riley.

Joy began to remember that one too, and she realized that a new sense of Self is trying to form. Joy removed the old one out and a new Sense of Self, from positive and negative memories had been formed. Riley was able to calm down and looked to see Bree and Grace. They asked her if she was okay. Riley sadly apologized that she had been a fool of herself when her friends told her that they were going to a different school. Her friends forgave her and once camp was done, Riley became friends with the FireHawks.

Living in peace, the original and new emotions work together to protect Riley, and understand that she is a beautiful piece of her that makes her who she is.
