Overview[]

Greedo was a Rodian bounty hunter employed by the gangster Jabba the Hutt to bring him the smuggler Han Solo, dead or alive. Although Greedo found his man and confronted Solo in the Mos Eisley Cantina; he also perished quickly thanks to Solo's even quicker lightning-fast draw.

First appearing in the 1977 feature film Star Wars; Greedo was physically portrayed by Paul Blake with Larry Ward providing his voice. Later reshot scenes featuring Greedo were undertaken with a prosthetic head that was manipulated by Maria de Aragon. An animated version of Greedo was voiced by Tom Kenny in the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series.

Background[]

Despite his relatively short but memorable scene in the Star Wars film, Greedo has had a much greater background and history in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. These include several comics and graphic novels which detail his sordid past history including several previous encounters with Han Solo. The majority of these encounters has caused Greedo to be regarded as a comedic foil, often bungling into situations and complicating events as a petty annoyance of Solo. These misadventures have established that Greedo and Solo have been long acquaintances with Greedo often trying to backstab Solo.

Greedo is a member of the Rodians, a noteworthy alien race who are well respected for being adventurous and daring warriors with a long tradition of hunting. This has caused a number of their species to become highly respected bounty hunters including Greedo the Elder whose successes made him a legend and extremely wealthy.

However, Greedo the Elder also had powerful enemies and one of them, Navik would kill him and steal his fortune. Greedo's pregnant wife fled Rodia to escape Navik and would later give birth to Greedo's son whom she named in honor of his illustrious father and ultimately found refuge on the desert planet of Tatooine.

A much younger Greedo had a brief appearance in the 1999 feature film, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace as one of the alien children who teased Anakin Skywalker over his failure at pod racing. This scene was ultimately deleted.

Trivia[]

  • Greedo is the center of a massive fan debate known as "Han Shot First". In the original Star Wars film release in 1977; Greedo was apparently slain by Solo who preemptively killed him while they were talking. In later remakes of the film, Director George Lucas has inserted scenes that made it appear that Greedo actually discharged his blaster before Han and missed with Han retaliating by shooting back. Lucas has stated that he retroactively disliked the original scene as it appeared that Han Solo was an amoral killer and morally ambiguous character whereas the later reshot scenes made it appear as he was defending himself. Proponents of "Han Shot First" however proclaim that it made Han Solo's transition from anti-hero to hero in the later half of the film much more meaningful and have petitioned for Lucas to alter the scene back.
