Trivia[]
- Was extremely interested in playing the role Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs to where he even optioned the rights with Orion Pictures. Hackman was not only the first choice to play the part, he was seriously considering directing it. However Hackman ultimately chose not to take part in the picture because he was worried about potential negative public perception as the infamous cannibal.
- Was one of creator Sherwood Schwartz's top picks to play family patriarch Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch but television executives were unwilling to risk anything on the then relatively unknown actor and refused to even let Schwartz interview Hackman to feel him out for the role.
- While at the Pasadena Playhouse, Hackman and a classmate were voted "Least Likely to Succeed". The classmate was Dustin Hoffman. The pair have been good friends ever since.
- Has stated that his performance in Scarecrow (1973) is his personal favorite.
- Turned down the lead roles in Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
- Says watching his own films makes him terribly nervous.
- In contrast with his on-screen image of tough guy and reactionary, in real life Hackman is said to be an extremely gentle, shy person who holds very progressive political views.
