Fred is a major character that appeared in the 2014 Big Hero 6 animated movie was portrayed by voice actor T.J. Miller. This version was heavily adapted from his comic book incarnation.
Background[]
Fred is based on a minor comic book character published by Marvel Comics known as Fredzilla. He debuted in Big Hero 6 #1, published in September of 2008 and was created by Chris Claremont and David Nakayama.
Fredzilla was a substitution character in the latest Big Hero 6 comic series and was created specifically to fill in one of the open slots to the team; owing to the fact that several characters that made up the original team were no longer available to serve in the relaunched comic book team series. A native Ainu, indigenous to the Hokkaido island of Japan; Fredzilla possesses the power to manifest a "Godzilla-like" aura that he could control.
He has continued to appear irregularly in various Marvel comics as part of the aforementioned group but has not enjoyed major success despite being one of the stars of a big screen adaptation, Big Hero 6 and a forthcoming TV adaptation series.
Major Plots[]
Personality and Traits[]
The laid back and highly eccentric mascot of San Fransokyo Institute of Technology; Fred appears to have a rather simple-minded, boisterous, whimsical, and eccentric personality. He has a self-proclaimed obsession in technology which is why he hangs around with a number of scientific prodigies and geniuses and often provides them with wild, improbable, and weird suggestions and ideas that he would love to see them turn into reality. Since apparently Fred's self-taught scientific education comes from comic books and movies; his ideas tend to be questionable and absurd to the extreme. Fred is also fond of giving nicknames to people and is the source behind GoGo, Honey Lemon, and Wasabi's names.
Fred is actually very lonely as his extremely wealthy parents are frequently absent and thus, he craves attention and in all probability, his wild and zany behavior is simply a way to get others to pay attention to him. He is also prone towards comedic antics and making inane remarks at any given moment, even inappropriate ones.
He is also a comic book fanatic and a Japanese kaiju otaku, often fantasizing about being a fire breathing giant lizard. Fred often indulges his interests and has a large collection of memorabilia of various action figures, posters, paintings, and comic books and typically dresses in grungy, baggy clothing and a woolen knit cap over his long, shaggy hair.
Indulging Fred's love of monsters, his full body battlesuit is modeled after a three-eyed Japanese kaiju and is mostly blue with orange highlights. Only the top and central head is real and allows him to see. In addition to serving as protective body armor against physical attacks; the legs of his suit are outfitted with a series of powerful hydraulics that allow him to leap incredible distances and land safely. Fred is armed with a powerful flamethrower built into the chest of the suit and he has built-in claws on his hands and feet.
Trivia[]
- Fred's SFIT mascot costume bears a remarkable resemblance to the Hideous Zippleback from DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon movie. This is not entirely a coincidence as Fred's voice actor T.J. Miller also voiced Tuffnut Thorston whose personal dragon is a Zippleback that he controls with his fraternal sister, Ruffnut.
