Overview[]
The comedic trials and tribulations of a middle-class African-American family living in Chicago with family patriarch and occasionally bull headed police officer Carl Winslow.
The main source of his dismay and discomfort (and for the rest of the family) is their nerdy, accident-prone, and incredibly obnoxious next-door neighbor, Steve Urkel who can't take a hint that his presence is less than pleasing for the Winslows.
Family Matters was a long-running American produced family sitcom TV series starring Reginald VelJohnson, Jaleel White, Kellie Shanygne Williams, Jo Marie Payton, Rosetta LeNoire, Darius McCrary, Telma Hopkins, and Bryton McClure. The series was a spin-off of Perfect Strangers, where Harriet and Carl Winslow were extremely popular recurring characters on the series.
Family Matters was actually more successful and longer lasting than its parent series thanks to its breakout character, Steve Urkel who was portrayed by Jaleel White. Originally a supporting character of the series, Urkel quickly graduated to becoming a main cast member and the focal point of the show in the later seasons.
The series was a mainstay of ABC's TGIF Friday night line-up with Step by Step where it had several crossover cameos with the other TGIF shows during its series run. It subsequently shifted over to rival station, CBS for a final season where declining ratings resulted in its cancellation.
