Emperor Palpatine is the mastermind antagonist in the first two Star Wars trilogies. The prequels show how he came he to power, and corrupts Anakin to the Dark Side of the Force. The original trilogy, taking place after the prequels, he rules the galaxy as its emperor through fear and corruption.
