Debuting as Captain Marvel, one of the earliest superheroes of the Golden Age of Comics first published in 1939; he was at the time, one of the greatest and most popular rivals to DC Comics' Superman. However his waning popularity and the financial and legal problems of his publishing company, Fawcett Comics resulted in the character vanishing for decades. Since that time, the rights to his namesake of Captain Marvel had been acquired by others and he has since become better known as Shazam!
