One of the most iconic literary characters of all time, the Phantom of Opera first appeared in the 1910 in a series of newspaper serials by French author Gaston Leroux who was inspired by a tragic accidental death at the Paris Opera House from a falling chandelier and rumors of ghosts inhabiting the location. His work was collected as "Le Fantôme de l'Opéra" or translated into English as "The Phantom of the Opera" which has simultaneously entertained and terrified audiences for decades ever since. He has inspired countless of adaptations, paraodies, and imitators ever since.
