One of the most iconic fictional dogs in history, Lassie was based on a true story of a collie who saved the life of a young sailor during World War I and inspired writer Eric Knight to pen a short story in 1938 for "The Saturday Evening Post". Knight later expanded it into a full length novel in 1940 and the heart warming tale inspired several films and TV shows based on the gallant canine.
