... And then there came a day, unlike any other. When Earth's Mightiest Heroes found themselves united by a common threat. Swearing together to defeat this enemy and defend the innocent ... or to avenge the fallen. And evil would learn to tremble ever afterwards for on that day ... the Avengers were born!
And this page was created with everyone that has ever been an Avenger in their respective universe.
Overview[]
The Avengers are a fictional team of superheroes dedicated towards protecting the world and avenging the wrongs and injustice committed against the innocent and helpless.
One of Marvel Comics' premiere superhero teams, they have been adapted in multiple incarnations in various television shows and live action movies over the decades of their existence becoming a powerful media franchise.
Background[]
The Avengers are a major and an incredibly popular organization of comic book superheroes that are published by Marvel Comics. They debuted in September of 1963 in Avengers #1 and were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The original Avengers' roster consisted predominantly of the foremost Marvel superheroes being published at that time including the Invincible Iron Man; the Mighty Thor; the Incredible Hulk; and the Astonishing Ant-Man and the Winsome Wasp who all appeared in their own published titles. They were intended to serve as a direct counterpart to DC Comics' rival flagship team, the Justice League of America with the novelty of Marvel Comics' most popular heroes all banded together in one comic book. They were quickly dubbed "Earth's Mightiest Heroes".
The group was ironically brought together inadvertently through the machinations of Loki, Thor's adopted brother and bitter rival who sought to set the God of Thunder against the powerful brute known as the Hulk, arranging for a clash between the pair but inadvertently attracted the attention of Ant-Man and the Wasp as well as Iron Man. Loki's manipulations were ultimately revealed and the group found themselves confronted with a foe that not one of them could defeat on their own. But the novice ad hoc team came together, combining their powers and in a display of teamwork ... triumphed and afterwards, they decided to stay together on a permanent basis and thus, the Avengers were born―to protect the innocent ... or if needs be―to avenge them.
The Avengers have also possessed a unique aspect unlike most other superhero teams of this era: a membership roster that was constantly in flux. Soon after the founding of the Avengers, the Hulk would angrily depart by the end of the second issue due to simmering tensions with the rest of the group. A new member, Captain America would quickly join with the fourth issue. By issue 16, the entire roster with the exception of Captain America had left and a whole new grouping had replaced them.
It would not be the last time that the Avengers would undergo massive changes and upheavals in their ranks; indeed, they welcomed new and unproven heroes and irregular and unconventional individuals to their rolls over the decades. As a result, the Avengers are considered to consist of the largest pantheon of Marvel superheroes over the years with the most diverse thanks to a vast and ever-changing rotating membership roster consisting of mythological heroes, aliens, supernatural entities, robots, mutants, urban vigilantes, and masked rogues along with their famous battlecry, "Avengers Assemble!"
Only a very few superhero organization surpass them in longevity such as the Fantastic Four who have almost exclusively consisted of their family unit or the X-Men who have been more inclusive and strictly consisted of mutants by and large. Even their long standing superhero team from rival publishing company DC Comics; the Justice League can arguably match them in both diversity and size.
Since their publication, the Avengers have routinely battled various threats and menaces to humanity ranging from Ultron, Dr. Doom, Kang the Conqueror, Thanos, and the Masters of Evil as well as playing a critical role in vast and sweeping multi-comic book storylines in the Marvel-verse such as the Kree/Skrull War, the Acts of Vengeance, the Infinity Gauntlet Saga, the Civil War, and the Secret Invasion.
The Avengers have included such notable heroic individuals such as Hawkeye the Marksman; the reality warping Scarlet Witch; the synthetic being known as the Vision; the superfast Quicksilver; the ionically charged Wonder Man; the wild were-woman Tigra; Hercules, the Greek God of Strength; the deadly Black Widow; the streetwise Luke Cage; the Immortal Iron Fist; Dr. Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme; the bombastic Ms. Marvel; the high-flying Falcon; the King of Wakanda, the Black Panther; the Sensational She-Hulk; the Amazing Spider-Man; and Daredevil, the Man Without Fear at one time or another. In addition, alumni of such notable teams such as the Beast and Wolverine of the X-Men have served extensive tours of membership in their ranks and even the individual members of the Fantastic Four including Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Thing, and the Human Torch have separately served brief periods of membership in the group.
The Avengers have also had a number of splinter groups who have been officially and unofficially tied to the organization such as the West Coast Avengers; the Great Lakes Avengers; the Young Avengers; Force Works; the Avengers A.I.; and A-Force. They have also been friends and associates with many Marvel superhero teams including the Defenders; the Champions; the X-Men; the New Warriors; the Fantastic Four; and the 21st and the 31st versions of the Guardians of the Galaxy among others and are frequent associates to the government agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. and have special government-sponsored powers and clearances.
The Avengers have frequently appeared in both cameos and main supporting roles in various Marvel Comics cartoons, animated films, and live action feature films over the decades as one of the predominant hero teams in the Marvel-verse.
