Overview[]

Blind Fury is a 1989 American produced action-comedy film with a focus on martial arts starring Rutger Hauer.  It was directed by Phillip Noyce and is a loose updated adaptation of the Japanese produced Zatoichi film series, specificially the 17th film, Zatoichi Challenged.

A blinded Vietnam vet seeking to reunite with an old military comrade finds himself confronted by a criminal organization.  It's a good thing that he can't see what he's up against... because they're the ones in trouble!

Plot[]

Many years ago, Nick Parker and Frank Devereaux were best friends in their platoon during the Vietnam War. However the pair become separated during a mission and Frank's nerve breaks and he flees, abandoning his friend behind. Nick is subsequently wounded during a mortar assault and left for dead.

He is found by a local tribe who treat his wounds and Nick discovers that he is now blind. The villagers instead teach him how to use his remaining senses to "see" and becomes a master swordsman. Returning to the United States after many years; he decides to look up his old veteran buddy, Frank.

His only known address for Frank however is out of date. His former wife Lynn and son, Billy still live at the house but after the divorce, Frank has since moved out of state. But Frank is in deep trouble and deeply in debt to a Reno crime boss MacCready who wants to use Frank's chemistry expertise to create designer drugs. As leverage, MacCready sends a couple of thugs to kidnap Frank's ex-wife and son. But the thugs botch things and end up accidentally killing Lynn who are in turn slain by Nick.

Left with an orphaned Billy, Nick decides to bring him to his father and help his old friend out of the jam he's in. Pursued by MacCready's numerous thugs, Nick is in way over his head. It's a good thing he can't see what he's up against...

Trivia[]

  • Although based on the Japanese character of Zatoichi, the movie and character of Nick Parker was actually named in homage of Nick Fury of Marvel Comics; Fury was a former World War II veteran who was blinded in one eye hence the title "Blind Fury" with the main character, Parker received his first name of "Nick".
