Background

Biography

Alexandra Paul and her identical twin sister Caroline were born July 29th 1963 in New York City. Their mother, Sarah, was a social worker and a liberal democrat and her father an investment banker and a conservative republican.

They were raised, together with their younger brother Jonathan, in rural Connecticut in the town of Cornwall.

Alexandra and Caroline went to middle school at Cornwall Consolidated School in Connecticut. Alexandra graduated at the top of her class. "I graduated first in my class and my twin was captain of all the teams. Then we both went to different boarding schools." The twins then went to different boarding schools; Alexandra attended Groton School in Massachusetts, which she loved. It is a small co-ed prep school with rigorous academic standards in rural New England. "I was one of those goofy kids who loved school."

Alexandra was accepted into Stanford University, but chose not to attend so that she could focus on a modeling and an acting career.

Modeling

Alexandra Paul modeling in 1979.

Alexandra’s first job was as a babysitter as a teenager. She began her career working as a model in New York City in 1979 at the age of 15-16. Alexandra had all the attributes for a model – she was tall, skinny and had a beautiful innocent face. Her dream was to become a supermodel. "When I was 15 I wanted to be thin." It was this dream that made her forego college.

Acting

Two years later she began taking acting classes. “I started taking acting classes at 18, when my modeling agent, Wilhelmina in New York City, asked me to so I could audition for commercials. I loved them!” It was modeling that segued Alexandra into her first acting job when she was cast in a lead role as a young model opposite to Daryl Hannah in the TV movie Paper Dolls (1982). She moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. "It was like a whole new world opened up (… ) it was like a new side of me was being unlocked and I became passionate about being an actor."

Athletics

Growing up in the country, far away from malls and movie theatres, and not even having a TV for most of the time gave Alexandra and Caroline only a few options: either to read, do sports or do both.

Quotes

  • “I play all these nice people! I’d really like to play a bad guy I spent years trying to shed my tomboy image. Now, I think I’d be good playing that.” (Jun 6, 1993)
  • “I want to become very powerful and rich,” she admits. “The only way kids will listen to issues is if there’s a celebrity attached. It’s kind of a sick thing, but people go for the glitzy.” (1987)
  • "I am not a particularly talented athlete, but I am good at consistency and persistence.  I am not actually naturally talented at much – and I don’t say that to be modest.  I actually think it has been a plus for me as I tend to prepare well, work hard and plod along until I get something done.  So my gifts lie there.  I think my discipline has given me such a leg up over people way smarter, more charismatic than I."
